Febrile Seizures

What are Febrile Seizures?

Some of our babies and young children up to 6 years of age may develop febrile seizures, also known as convulsions, that occur with fever. Contractions in the arms and legs or unresponsiveness may be observed. Awareness of the environment and what is being said decreases. Most last for a short period of 1-2 minutes, but some may last 15 minutes or longer.

Seizures often occur on the first day of a febrile infection, but can also occur on the 2nd or 3rd day.

Her 100 çocuğun 4’ünde ateşli havale görülmekte ve 1/3’ünde tekrarlamaktadır. Yakın akrabalarda ateşli havale geçirme öyküsü varsa ya da ilk nöbet küçük yaşlarda görülüyorsa nöbetin tekrarlama ihtimali artmaktadır.

Most febrile seizures are harmless. In a small proportion, the probability of developing epilepsy in the future increases.

During a seizure, the parent should remain calm and lay the child on their side on the ground. If there is an object such as food in the mouth, it should be removed gently, and nothing such as fingers should be inserted into the mouth. If the seizure lasts more than 5 minutes, the child should be taken to the nearest healthcare facility.

At the healthcare facility, treatment for the seizure and the infection causing the fever should be arranged. If the seizure lasted a long time or recurred during the day, the child needs to be hospitalized.

To prevent recurrence of febrile seizures, close monitoring of fever during infection periods and use of fever-reducing medications if necessary may be recommended. Cases that continue to have recurrent febrile seizures should consult pediatric neurologists for planning of examination and treatment.
