Autism and Symptoms

What is Autism and its Symptoms?

Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental difference, some of which has been present from birth and some of which emerges in the early periods of life. It is thought to originate from causes that affect the structure or functioning of the brain, but whose mechanism is not yet fully understood.

Studies on genetic and environmental causes continue.
If they do not make eye contact with people, do not look back when their name is called, do not point to things they want with their fingers, do not show interest in games played by their peers, have delayed speech and frequently repeat words, have repetitive movements such as rocking and clapping their hands, have habits such as lining up toys or objects, the presence of autism should be suspected in our children.

With the earliest detection of symptoms and early initiation of treatment, symptoms can be brought under control in approximately half of our children diagnosed with autism. The main element in treatment is special education. Although there is not sufficient scientific data, some dietary content adjustments and medications can also be part of the treatment.

From a neurological perspective, in children diagnosed with autism, epilepsy development rates are around 30%. Short-term seizures that may be overlooked can limit the response to education and daily life of our children receiving special education.

For this reason, our cases diagnosed with autism must definitely be followed by child neurology physicians and electroencephalography (EEG) examination should be performed when necessary.
