COVID-19 and Our Children
The year 2020 found us in a period where we had to fight a global epidemic along with earthquakes, wars, news of martyrs, economic difficulties, before even completing three months. The coronavirus epidemic that started in Wuhan, China quickly affected the entire world. The number of people developing disease symptoms and deaths is increasing day by day and seems to increase further.
We see that the coronavirus infection especially affects elderly people and can cause deaths. However, looking at the data announced from China, Italy and other countries to the whole world, we can say that middle-aged group and our children can also be affected by this disease, but mortality rates are lower than the elderly group. Our children and middle-aged people carry this infection and in case of contact with the elderly group, can transmit this infection to them and cause their loss.
Looking at the effects of coronavirus infection in children, there has been no loss of cases under 9 years of age due to this disease yet, however, different pictures can develop from mild flu-like infection symptoms to severe respiratory distress. Severe headache, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever are reported. Of course, these are the early period symptoms of the disease, time will show what kind of symptoms will develop in individuals who catch this disease in the late period.
Especially in children with chronic diseases related to the heart, lungs, kidneys and nervous system, coronavirus infection is likely to cause a severe picture. Moreover, even though the clinical findings of our healthy children may be mild, there is a possibility that they may carry this infection to the elderly members of the family, causing them to be hospitalized with a severe picture or even causing their deaths. For this reason, as scientists frequently warn from the screens, reducing social contact with people and paying close attention to personal hygiene is very important, especially in the next few months.
The coronavirus epidemic has once again shown how important public health is and that one of the most basic methods of achieving this is personal hygiene. In this epidemic, which is likely to show its effects for a long time all over the world, if we are not thinking about ourselves, we should not leave home unless necessary and keep our social distance in order not to risk the lives of our relatives and loved ones.
