When Should We Suspect Autism?

When Should We Suspect Autism?

Hello dear parents,

Our children, our most precious treasures, show very rapid development starting from pregnancy and especially during the ages of 0–3. During this period, which we can describe as a “critical period” in terms of development, not only their overall health quality but also their environmental conditions must be adequately supportive. Parent-child communication, spending sufficient time with peers, and limiting screen exposure are some of the positive environmental factors that support early childhood development.

In some children, certain signs observed between the ages of 0–3 may raise suspicion of autism. These include delayed speech, difficulty following instructions, meaningless repetition of words (echolalia), playing alone instead of interacting with peers, and restlessness in crowded environments. Additionally, toe walking, repetitive or unusual hand movements when excited or upset, spinning around, or excessive interest in spinning objects may further increase suspicion.

If one or more of these signs are present, it is very important to consult a specialist physician. Early evaluation and early intervention play a crucial role in supporting the child’s development.

Wishing you healthy days.
